Literature Supporting the Engelmann Herbarium

In 2010, the Missouri Botanical Garden began digitzing plant specimens from the personal herbarium of George Engelmann representative of early collecting done in the American West during the 1840s and 50s. The more than 8,000 specimens gathered for the project can be found on the project's website.

Since the conclusion of this project, the garden has continued digitizing Engelmann's collection and now hosts more than 11,000 scanned specimens on its tropicos.org portal.

In support of the specimens collected on the expanded American frontier, the project also digitized more than 100 volumes of published works resulting from the various expeditions represented.  These volumes are presented here for free online public access. These volumes are partially representative of Engelmann's published writings and of the work of his collaborators. The complete list can be browsed by selecting the title to this page above. A complete hyperlinked list of Engelmann's publications is currently available on Wikipedia in the article George Engelmann bibliography.
